Language Processing Laboratory

Welcome to the Language Processing Lab. Our research focuses on the interaction among linguistic, auditory, suprasegmental, and cognitive aspects in language processing. We emphasize on experimental studies that investigate the interchange between language aspects, more specifically syntax, and other abilities in different populations. We are particularly interested in bilinguals, individuals with cochlear implants, and children with language disorders. Recent projects have explored the effect of working memory on sentence processing in children with specific language impairment, stuttering, autism or Down syndrome, and the effects of prosody on the syntactic processing of children and adults with cochlear implants. There are currently two main ongoing research projects. One of the projects applies eye-tracking measures to investigate the role of executive functions on sentence processing in children with cochlear implants. The other ongoing investigation concerns a multicenter project conducted in collaboration with researchers from University College London and Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil. That project focuses on the interchange between speech production and word finding difficulties in young bilingual children. Our laboratory provides research opportunities to both undergraduate and graduate students of the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences of Lehman College, The City University of New York, as well as international students and visiting scholars.
