Learning Goals

Student Goals and Learning Objectives

Goal 1:
Students will acquire the concepts, theories, and findings pertaining to human communication disorders and swallowing to meet the standards for certification and New York State licensure in speech-language pathology

  • Learning Outcome 1.1:
    Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the biological, neurological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, linguistic, and cultural bases of basic human communication and swallowing processes
  • Learning Outcome 1.2:
    Distinguish between and among specific etiologies, characteristics, anatomical, physiological, acoustic, developmental, psychological, linguistic and cultural correlates of developmental and/or acquired speech, language, swallowing, and hearing disorders, including cognitive and social aspects of communication and the use of augmentative /alternative communication modalities.
  • Learning Outcome 1.3:
    Differentiate and apply knowledge of  principles of prevention, assessment, and intervention of speech, language, swallowing, and/or  hearing disorders including consideration of anatomical / physiological, psychological, developmental, linguistic and cultural correlates across the lifespan.

Goal 2:
Students will complete experiences sufficient in breadth and depth to demonstrate competency in evaluation, intervention, and personal interaction in human communication disorders and swallowing.

  • Learning Outcome 2.1:
    Integrate knowledge of neurological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, linguistic, and cultural bases of human communication disorders and swallowing processes pertaining to normal and abnormal human development across the life span into clinical practice, written clinical reports and/or writing assignments.
  • Learning Outcome 2.2:
    Effectively manage the clinical process using constructive personal interaction, evidence-based practice, ethical conduct,  principles of scientific research, and appropriate technology in clinical application.

Goal 3:
Students will demonstrate professional written and oral communication skills and information literacy.

  • Learning Outcome 3.1:
    Employ effective oral and/or written communication through oral/written presentation, projects, and/or papers, using appropriate terminology and concepts applicable to the discipline of speech-language pathology and audiology.

Goal 4:
Students will acquire the knowledge of contemporary issues, principles and practices of ethical conduct and scientific research, and their clinical applications.          

  • Learning Outcome 4.1:
    Recognize and specify knowledge of:  contemporary professional issues, entry level and advanced certifications, licensure, other relevant professional credentials, and local, state, and national regulations and policies to professional practice.
  • Learning Outcome 4.2:
    Critically assess and evaluate research and its clinical application in order to become a knowledgeable consumer and a  well-informed, effective and proficient clinician.
