Classroom to Clinic Initiatives:

Undergraduate students in the department of speech language and hearing sciences and those graduates taking pre-requisite speech-language courses at Lehman College, are invited every semester to engage in a variety of Classroom to Clinic Initiatives in the Speech and Hearing Center. These include but are not limited to: Play Partners in our Early Childhood Clinics, Conversational Partners in our Aphasia Clinic, Student Translators for our Translator Squads, IEP Supporters, Clinic Assistants, and High School Ambassadors. While activities in the Speech and Hearing Center are presently limited due to low density requirements due to the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteer opportunities continue to increase as density increases.

The Classroom to Clinic Initiatives provide applications of the theoretical nature of treatment and evaluation in speech-language pathology in a supportive environment that makes their academic learning relevant as follows:

• Yields a proximity to reality experience enabling relationship-building with faculty, staff and students, mentorship opportunities, and meaningful learning experiences
• Creates opportunities for personalized attention and conversation between student and Clinical Faculty instructor, e.g., facilitates counseling on personal statements, résumé preparation, graduate school applications, and/or employment prospects.
• Exposes the student to a diversity of thought and facilitates the development of cultural responsivity
• Enables the student to appreciate the value of their contributions
• Enables students to develop advocacy and self-advocacy skills
• Functions as the tangible reality part of the dream of working in the field of speech-language pathology.
