School of Business Spotlight: Daniela Loveridge

Even before senior Daniela Loveridge chose her major, she imagined a career path leading to opportunity and growth. She took a leap into accounting, a decision that has opened doors while she is still in school: four internships, the presidency of Lehman's National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) chapter, and a growing roster of student connections. Daniela doesn't only pride herself in being a standout CUNY student, but also in demonstrating to students coming in behind her what's possible for them.
How did you find your path into accounting?
My first wake-up call was in high school during a career test. I kept getting matched with a lawyer or a cop, and neither felt right. I was accepted into the ACE Program (Accelerate, Complete, and Engage), and accounting was one of the eligible majors offered. I chose it because I didn't have to limit myself — every firm needs accountants.
How did student clubs shape your college experience?
ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals for America) taught me a lot starting freshman year. College isn't just about going to class and then going home. In this field, you need to network and talk to people to get ahead.
Now I am the president of the Lehman Chapter of NABA. It's rewarding to see the results of students landing internships and jobs or just feeling more confident talking to recruiters early in their careers.
Which internship taught you the most?
I did a rotational internship at Lincoln Hospital through the LEARN Program (Leadership, Education, Administration, Rotation, and Networking). I rotated through capital planning, marketing, finance, and food nutrition. It showed me how corporate America works, when to speak up for myself, and how to manage my time well.
As a student in the School of Business, what have you learned outside the classroom?
I have learned to hustle, not nonstop, but smartly. There are a lot of opportunities at the School of Business: certificates, events, campus visits. I always like to say that a closed mouth doesn't get fed.
What are some words of advice you want to share with students?
Lehman College is here to help you. Now more than ever, people are starting to pay attention to the power that CUNY holds and the amazing students that we have. Get to know your professors and deans. Build good relationships with other students too—you never know who they'll become down the line. Getting involved on campus is one of the best things you can do for yourself.
