The Leonard Lief Library at Lehman College is now home to a major book donation from Professor Emerita Ofelia García Otheguy, a distinguished voice in bilingual education and sociolinguistics. Her personal collection spans bilingual and Latino education, sociolinguistics, and related fields, and includes volumes featuring her own scholarly contributions.

“Lehman is very fortunate that Dr. García has chosen the Leonard Lief Library as the home for her collection, and we look forward to sharing these materials with students and faculty,” said Cecilia Espinosa, chair of the Department of Early Childhood and Childhood Education, who played a key role in bringing the collection to Lehman.

García, Professor Emerita in the Ph.D. programs of Urban Education and of Latin American, Iberian, and Latino Cultures (LAILAC) at the CUNY Graduate Center and a member of the National Academy of Education and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, selected Lehman as the permanent home for these materials, citing the College’s deep commitment to urban and multilingual education. The collection is expected to be a lasting resource for students, faculty, and researchers across multiple disciplines.

“We have a very strong bilingual education program at Lehman, and this collection will be a tremendous resource for our students,” said Alison Lehner-Quam, Education Librarian and Associate Professor.

After review and cataloguing, the books should be in the stacks next year, she added.
