Biography
Luis is a sociolinguist with a PhD in Latin American, Iberian, and Latino Cultures from The Graduate Center – CUNY. He has an MA in Language Sciences from the Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia in Mexico City and a BA in Sociology from the Universidad de Guadalajara.
Luis has taught in the CUNY system for 10 years. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Anthropology Department of Queens College, where he teaches an undergraduate course in Linguistic Anthropology. He has also taught Hispanic Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Pragmatics, and Dialectology.
He is a member of the ‘Grupo de Glotopolítica de CUNY,’ a research group formed by students, scholars, and faculty united by a critical perspective that aims at understanding and explaining the complex relations between linguistic practices and power in language use. Within this group, he has worked on different publications and research projects, such as his doctoral dissertation, a historical analysis of ideological representations of language and conversation in etiquette manuals circulating during the 19th and 20th centuries in Mexico. Luis is also a member of the Columbia School Linguistic Society, where he participates in research projects on Spanish grammar. He is also a founding member of the Mexican Studies Group at The Graduate Center.
