Welcome to the School of Arts and Humanities!

As Dean of the School, it is a pleasure to work with departments that embody Lehman College’s mission of providing a strong liberal arts education through vibrant programs in the performing arts, visual arts, and humanities. Our undergraduate and graduate degree programs are among the best in the Bronx, and every year we present an impressive calendar of music concerts, stage plays, dance festivals, multimedia productions, film screenings, and art exhibitions, as well as public lectures and recitals.

Our faculty are an extraordinarily talented group of scholars and artists who have been recognized with National Endowment of the Humanities Awards, Fulbright Scholarships, Woodrow Wilson Fellowships, Mellon Fellowships, Franklin Research Grants, and CUNY Graduate Center Awards, as well as awards for their creative work—including an Oscar, an Emmy, and numerous artist residencies. They are deeply committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of teachers, journalists, editors, musicians, artists, designers, animators, dancers, lawyers, translators, entrepreneurs, legislators, public servants, and professors.

The School of Arts and Humanities offers more than thirty majors and forty minors. You can choose from majors that focus on creating original works—such as Art, Film and TV Studies, or Computer Graphics and Imaging (CGI); majors that emphasize performance—including Music, Theatre, Dance, or Multimedia Performing Arts; majors that develop research and writing skills—such as English, History, Journalism, Philosophy, or Africana Studies; and majors that expand your knowledge of languages and cultures—including Spanish, French, Italian, Linguistics, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, or Latino Studies.

You can also add minors such as Women’s and Gender Studies, Disability Studies, Human Rights and Peace Studies, Digital Music Applications, Professional Writing, and Mind-Body Wellness.

We offer master’s degrees in Applied Music and Music Teaching, Art, English, History, and Spanish, and we contribute to the master’s program in Liberal Studies.

With mentoring from our outstanding faculty, our students have earned Fulbright Teaching Fellowships, Gilman Scholarships, Jeannette K. Watson Fellowships, and Chancellor’s Global Scholarships to study and teach abroad. They have received numerous prizes, awards, residencies, and scholarships for continued study. Many have gone on to pursue advanced degrees—including M.A., M.F.A., M.S., M.P.A., J.D., M.B.A., and Ph.D. programs—started their own businesses, and launched rewarding careers.
