Michael Buckley, Director

Dr. Michael Buckley is a native New Yorker and proud graduate of two CUNY colleges. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Lehman College, City University of New York, and has been involved with Lehman’s Center for Human Rights and Peace Studies since its inception in 2010. Michael helped establish the Center’s minor, served as Acting Director in 2019 and 2020, helped organize conferences and events, and assisted with an innovative conflict resolution program at the James Baldwin High School in Manhattan.  

Michael has published in numerous journals, including the Journal of Medicine and PhilosophyHuman Rights ReviewEthics and Global PoliticsJournal of Business EthicsMetaphilosophyPhilosophical QuarterlyJournal of Moral PhilosophyThe Journal of Value InquiryInternet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, and others. He has been awarded many research grants and was nominated for the Gregory Kavka/UC Irvine Prize in Political Philosophy for his paper, “The Priority of Legitimacy in Times of Political Transition.”  

Michael regularly teaches courses in political philosophy, human rights and peace studies, business ethics, and global justice. Between 2013-2015, he led Lehman students on an exchange program to Chile to study the country’s experience with transitional justice following the Pinochet Dictatorship. Before joining Lehman’s faculty in 2007, he worked as an analyst for a media research firm in California, publishing over 300 research briefs and serving as the lead author for three research data books. Prior to that, he worked as an analyst for investment firms in San Francisco and New York. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Emory University, a BA from Hunter College, CUNY, and a BBA from Baruch College, CUNY.
