Lehman’s Adult Learning Center (ALC) took center stage at the I AM BMI (Black Male Initiative) event, held at the CUNY Graduate Center on April 2. The event, which celebrates the achievements of students and alumni from CUNY campuses, recognized Gina Cortez, a dedicated staff member at the ALC, whose inspiring journey exemplifies the transformative power of education.

From earning her GED through the Adult Learning Center to becoming an integral part of the team, Gina is now helping the next wave of students on the academic path.

“Being honored in this way is deeply meaningful,” said Cortez. “I truly believe that when we support one another, embrace creative solutions, and lead with collaboration, we create space for real growth.”

The event showcased the profound impact of perseverance and education.

“Witnessing Gina’s journey come full circle was a powerful reminder of the impact our work has,” said Shaitasia Holley, Education Advisor at the Adult Learning Center. “Her story is living proof of how education transforms lives—not just for individuals, but for entire communities. Celebrating that kind of growth and resilience reminds us why we do what we do.”

Currently, Gina works as a College Assistant at the ALC, where she plays a key role in guiding and mentoring students. She continues to inspire those around her as she works toward earning her undergraduate degree at Lehman College.

She emphasized, “By encouraging one another, we build unity and confidence. Our aim is to create a space where everyone feels heard, valued, and supported. It’s about pursuing progress, not perfection.”
