English Professor Mario DiGangi Takes a New Look at Shakespeare

December 1, 2025

Lehman College and CUNY Graduate Center English professor Mario DiGangi's work was featured in the latest issue of Research in Focus. DiGangi's latest essay in PMLA, "Unfairing the Fair: Sexuality and the Affective Epistemology of Race in Shakespeare’s Sonnets," examines the various ways Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets portray people’s bodies and identities, especially around questions of race and sexuality. He draws a connection between the specific language Shakespeare employs to describe characters’ bodies and feelings and the reader's understanding of those characters' relationships, conflicts, and differences.
