The Lehman College and Community Band presents its final performance of the spring season, “Come Sunday,” on Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m. in the Lovinger Theatre. This event is free and open to the public.

Directed by Professor Alan Hollander, the program will feature the title selection Come Sunday by contemporary African American composer Omar Thomas. Composed in 2018, the two-part composition has soulful, gospel-like melodies, meant to reflect the nature of Black worship services. Also influenced by jazz, blues, R&B and J.S. Bach, each part resembles one of the most fundamental acoustical elements of these worships: the Hammond organ.

Composed of Lehman students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members, the Lehman College and Community Band will also showcase the romantic and lyrical Estrellita or “little star” by Mexican composer Manuel Ponce, the cinematic and triumphant Victory by Rossano Galante, and the resplendent Sunrise at Angel’s Gate by Philip Sparke, which was inspired by the composer’s first experience watching the sun rise over the glorious rock formations of the Grand Canyon.

Rounding out the program is a special performance of Haydn’s virtuosic Oboe Concerto, known for its lyrical beauty and technical challenge, by Tiantong Wang, winner of the 2025 Jerome Sala Memorial Competition.

The Memorial Competition is named in memory of Jerome Sala, a Lehman Music professor for 20 years who taught music history and instrumental methods and was founding director of the Lehman College and Community Band. The competition is open to any high school music student residing in the New York Tri-state area, who plays a woodwind, brass, or mallet percussion instrument.
