Evelyn Durán Urrea received her M.A. in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Arizona. She completed her Ph.D. coursework in Hispanic Linguistics in the University of New Mexico until she moved to Penn State to continue her dissertation research on Spanish-English code-switching.
She received her Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics from Penn State University in 2012. Her research interests include bilingualism, Spanish-English code-switching, and Spanish as a heritage language. She has been teaching and supervising Heritage Spanish courses at the undergraduate level since 2002.
Her recent research has focused on assessment and placement of heritage and second language learners of Spanish at the college level, and practices in the foreign language classroom, specifically, a pedagogical model for the learning of Spanish as a Heritage Language based on the Flipped Classroom approach and Open Educational Resources initiatives. She serves as the Spanish B.A. adviser and Heritage Spanish coordinator in the Department of Languages and Literatures.
