Office of the Registrar at Lehman College

Ability to Benefit (ATB)

The New York State legislature mandated a new eligibility requirement, the Ability to Benefit or ATB Exam, which may impact the student's award under the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). This regulation affects students who earned their high school diploma outside the United States and who are scheduled to receive their first TAP award beginning Fall 2006 or later.

You may meet the ATB standard by achieving the minimum required score on an ATB Exam. Lehman College will administer the Accuplacer (an approved ATB Exam) for all students affected by the regulation. All students must take the ATB exam within the add/drop period of the respective term.

You may schedule an appointment with the Lehman College Testing Office, to take the ATB exam as the exams are being offered virtually until December. Students may contact the Testing Office via email at Oscar.Rigamonty@Lehman.Cuny.Edu. Students are required to meet/exceed the following scores:

  • Reading: A score of 233 or higher
  • Writing: A score of 235 or higher
  • Arithmetic: A score of 230 or higher

Students who do not meet the required scores may contact the Testing Office for information on remediation instruction. Once the remediation is complete, the student may request to retake the ATB exam. To be eligible for TAP, students are required to take the exam within the add/drop period of the term, even if permission is granted to retake the exam.
