Professor Edward Kennelly of Lehman's Plant Sciences program hosted visiting researchers from Ethiopia, who brought over 400 grain samples to the U.S. for analysis as part of the New York Botanical Garden's Traditional Grain Mixtures Project. Using standardized protocols developed by the Periodic Table of Food Initiative, Lehman faculty, alongside undergraduate and graduate students, will study how growing grains in mixtures—a traditional farming practice—impacts their nutritional and phytonutrient composition. The work aims to support global efforts to improve food security and better understand the value of traditional agricultural practices.
