A large part of higher education is teaching adult learners, what’s referred to as andragogy, but many professors still teach these older students the same way they approach teens fresh out of High School. That’s why Elgloria Harrison, Dean of the School of Health Sciences, Human Services and Nursing (HS2N), coauthored a chapter with Morris Thomas, Assistant Provost at Howard University, for the newly published book Andragogy in Practice: Case Studies on Innovation in Adult Learning.

“These students are older, wiser, and have more lived experiences than the traditional student,” said Dean Harrison. "Our goal is to equip educators with tools that help adult learners bring their whole selves to the classroom so they can actively participate in the learning process, share their experiences, and apply their knowledge to practical situations."

The chapter, “Andragogy and the WHOLE Experience Framework to Inform Diversity and Inclusion Practices,” explores how adult learning principles combined with the WHOLE Experience Framework can guide faculty in developing equitable and engaging learning environments. Their work highlights practical approaches that support diversity and foster inclusion within adult education settings. It’s especially important at a campus like Lehman, which is an Hispanic-Serving Institution with a non-traditional population that includes many adult learners.

"We recognize that traditional teaching methods often don’t meet the needs of adult learners, which is why we focus on andragogical principles to create supportive and collaborative learning environments," Dean Harrison added. “Our results suggest that the instructors who engaged in the workshops found our approach easy to apply in a real-world context.”
