Following in the footsteps of Charles Darwin, Professor of Plant Sciences Edward Kennelly is now a fellow of the esteemed Linnean Society. Founded in 1788, it is the oldest learned society devoted to the science of natural history.

"We owe our modern plant classification system to Carl Linnaeus," said Kennelly. "Plant research like mine—particularly medical plants—relies on the correct identification of plants used by people as medicines around the world."

Kennelly celebrated with two other fellows—former graduate school classmate Oliver Phillips and mentor Memory Elvin-Lewis, who nominated him for inclusion, at the May induction ceremony in London.

"It was moving to be inducted into this society, in a historic room with a portrait of Darwin," he said.

Kennelly shares the distinction with another Lehman biologist, Joseph Rachlin.
