The Multilingual Journalism Program is designed to prepare students to work in print and electronic media (newspapers, magazines, radio, and television broadcast, and Internet) in English as well as in other languages.

The uniqueness of this 42-credit interdisciplinary BA degree program is its focus on heritage speakers of foreign languages, allowing them to develop professional level command of their native language as well as English. At the same time this program seeks to enhance the cultural sensitivity of native speakers of English while promoting their acquisition of linguistic skills in foreign language. This is the only program of its kind in the nation.

Internships with local, national and international media and institutions are an integral part of the program. The program received a three-year grant from Pew Center for Civic Journalism to launch Eyes on the Bronx, a project in conjunction with Bronxnet, the public access television station of the borough.

The students of the program produce The Bronx Journal, a monthly multilingual newspaper published in eleven (11) languages; 168 HORAS, a weekly Spanish-language television program, and in conjunction with Bronxnet, Multilingual News, a weekly news review in Japanese, Italian, and French.

The Bronx Journal circulates free of charge in the six school districts of the Bronx, where schools use it as a Newspaper in Education Program. One high school, Foreign Language Academy & Global Studies (FLAGS), uses the newspaper as a required tool for the teachers.

For the past three years, our students have received full scholarships from the Freedom Forum and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists to attend national conventions. Some of our graduates are already working for various media in print and electronic fields.
