Deleting files from IMAP folders - Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express

Deleting a message from an IMAP folder (e.g. the Inbox) from Eudora, Outlook or Outlook
Express does not actually delete the message.  The message is simply marked for
deletion.  (In Outlook and Outlook Express, the a line appears through the message
description; in Eudora, an 'X' appears in one of the columns in the table of contents.)

To permanently delete the marked items in Outlook or Outlook Express:

    Edit > Purge Deleted Items

To permanently delete marked items in Eudora:

    Message > Delete items

Deleting files from IMAP folders - Netscape

Go to Properties (of the account) > Server Settings.  Netscape's behavior is determined
by this setting.

If Move to the Trash Folder is selected, mail goes to Trash on the server. File > Empy Trash
will delete the items from Trash.

If Marked for Deletion is selected, a red x appears next to subject.  File > Compact folders  (?)
will permanently delete items.  There does not appear to anything comparable to Purge deleted items
in Outlook.

Changing settings with items in trash or marked for deletion may have unexpected effects.
