Ghost Story Part 3
Installing software and configuring the
Model (source, reference) Computer
Note:
used Windows XP, Office XP, Acrobat Reader, WS-FTP, Symantec
Anti Virus, Hummingbird, Netscape, IE 6
-
Microsoft advises that software be installed under the Administrator account
without a password. (Symantec advises not to use the Administrator
account but instead
an account in the admininstrator group. We went with Microsoft's advice.)
-
If the PC is being turned on for the first time, respond to the usual Windows setup
prompts regarding time zone, computer name etc. You may also be required to create at least
one user account. XP will automatically log you into this account. Be sure that you do not accidentally start to install software
under this account. To get to the Administrator account, log out, then hit ctrl-alt-del twice to get the login
window where you enter "Administrator" as the userid.
-
Install Windows service packs and updates, applications, patches and critical
updates, create shortcuts etc. Update virus definitions and configure LiveUpdate. Refer to
Checklist for XP Setups as a guide.
Don't configure email or a permanent network addresses.
-
Try to
standardize the appearance of the All Users desktop if possible. You can login
with the account you were forced to create during the setup to check.
-
Verify that the applications all work properly and that everything has
been installed.
-
Delete primary user account you created at startup
-
Empty Recycle Bin, restore any settings you may have changed (e.g changed
folder views), remove temporary IP addresses etc.
