Ghost Story Part 6

Prepare Source Computer for Replication with Sysprep and the Sysprep answer file (sysprep.inf)
  1. In the root directory of the source (model) system, create a folder called c:\sysprep\. Copy sysprep.inf (which you created by running setup manager), sysprep.exe and setupcl.exe to this directory.

  2. Go to command prompt: Start > Run > cmd

  3. Change directory: cd c:\sysprep

  4. Run sysprep

  5. select Use mini-setup

  6. select Reseal

PC will shutdown after Sysprep completes. The computer on which you just ran Sysprep will look just like the cloned computers to be created next. It has had its SIDs removed. Upon re-boot, mini-setup will run and you will be prompted for Product key etc. A new license activation takes place using the cloned PC's machine id and the product key belonging to the copy of XP shipped with the PC. (Note that installation from the volume licensed CDs do not require activation. This means that the answer file created from such installations can include the product key thus eliminating this step in the mini setup.)
