Install Symantec Ghost Corporate Edition 7.5 under Windows. If you plan to use Ghostcast to create and distribute images, the PC on which you install Ghost should have sufficient space to hold very large image files (3-5 GB each).
Select "Install Symantec Ghost Corporate Edition" from installation menu.
Install "standard tools only". Ghost Console not required.
The following instructions deal primarily with using the Ghost MultiCast server to dump and load the image. Other options include direct disk to disk or partition to partition copy and loading images from and dumping to CD or other media. Installing Ghost under Windows is still useful for these uses in order to create the necessary bootable DOS disks needed to run Ghost. (DOS Ghost must be running on the PC from which you will be dumping the image and to which you will be loading the image. The Ghostcast server controls the process.)
We worked with two PC configurations with Windows XP Professional - the base model (some of which had more memory, slightly different video driver and CD: 256 vs. 512 RAM; Intel Extreme Graphics Controller vs. Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphic Controller; Lite on LTN4865 48x MAX vs. Samsung CD-ROM SC 148C) and a mid range model with a much larger hard drive, CD RW etc. A separate image was created for each type. Except for the variation within the base model we did not test how different the destination computers can be from the source computer. (Sysprep, which we used to prepare the source computer for imaging, is supposed to setup the Windows installation to rerun plug and play to detect new devices and rebuild the driver database.)
To receive and distribute the image, with Ghostcast, this computer will need a network connection to the client PCs either using a hub or cross-over cable.
There may be a limit to the number of client computers which can simultaneously be connected to a GhostCast session or the Ghost console depending on the number of licenses purchased at any one time. However, we never connected more than 10 clients at any one time and did not receive any complaints that we exceeded the licensed limit. (There is supposed to be a way to increase this limit as more licenses are purchased.)
