Faculty Dr. Elia Machado
Dr. Elia Machado received her Ph.D in Geography from Clark University and joined the department of Earth, Environmental and Geospatial sciences. Prior to joining Lehman, she was a graduate fellow at UC Berkeley as well as the Institut Supéieur d’Action Internationale ét de Production in Angers (France), and has worked as a researcher at the Biogeography lab of UC Santa Barbara and Clark Labs (Clark University). Her research focuses on the application and development of geospatial methodologies to examine environmental change and its linkages with human health and vulnerability to disasters. She has a strong interest in Latin America and is currently working on three projects in the region investigating vulnerability to disasters in Guatemala and the spatial relationship between dengue fever and socio-ecological factors in Mexico and Panama. Dr. Machado's research has been published in various academic journals including the International Journal of Remote Sensing, Applied Geography, and Remote sensing, among others.
Student Alison Wong
Alison Wong, an undergraduate student with Macaulay Honors College at Lehman College has merged her passion of environmental policy by double majoring in environmental science and political science. After realizing that research and advertising is a way to spread the word about environmental issues, she interned for the Center for Environmental Research and Conservation at Columbia University. Working with the Sustainability Council and Student Government at Lehman, she created the Earth Day Festival hosting local green organizations and a recycled arts contest. As a recipient of Jeannette K. Watson Fellowship in 2013, she has interned with America Needs You as a Strategic Partnerships intern and at City Councilmember Brad Lander’s Office as a constituent liaison. Following her graduation in May 2015, she will be interning at Hoops4Hope in Harare, Zimbabwe.
