Online Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Speech-Language Pathology
The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Speech-Language Pathology is designed for students who intend to apply to the graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology but have completed a major in a different field. It is a rigorous program designed to prepare students for graduate school in Speech-Language Pathology. The post baccalaureate certificate is offered online but can also be taken in-person at Lehman.
To be considered for the Lehman College Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Speech-Language Pathology, students must first be admitted as a general transfer student:
- Submit a CUNY Transfer Application and choose “Speech-Language Pathology CERT” as your intended major.
- Follow all general admission application requirements.
- Once accepted, make an appointment with our department’s advisors, Dr. Almodovar (diana.almodovar@lehman.cuny.edu) or Prof. Boylan (mary.boylan@lehman.cuny.edu) to discuss the selection of courses. You must take at least 5 of the 6 courses at Lehman. If you wish to take one course at another college, the course syllabus must be evaluated and approved by our department’s advisors prior to enrollment.
The fall general transfer application deadline is February 1st but applications are accepted on a rolling basis through mid-July.Students interested in summer enrollment must submit a fall application and complete enrollment steps prior to the start of summer classes.
The spring general transfer application deadline is September 15th but applications are accepted on a rolling basis through mid-December. Students interested in winter enrollment must submit a spring application and complete enrollment steps prior to the start of winter classes.
The Certificate consists of the following six courses, which fulfill the requirements for application to the graduate program at Lehman College. At least one section of each course is offered online. The 200-level courses have no prerequisites and do not require permission. The 300-level courses have prerequisites, as detailed below.
The Certificate consists of the following six courses for a total of 18 credits:
- SPV 228 Introduction to Audiology
- SPV 245 (LNG 245) Articulatory Phonetics
- SPV 247 (LNG 247) Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech Mechanism
- SPV 321 Language Acquisition
- SPV 326 Speech Pathology I – Functional Disorders (SPV 321 prerequisite) OR
- SPV 327 Speech Pathology II – Organic Disorders
- SPV 349 Speech and Hearing Sciences
Prerequisites and Grade Restrictions
The 200-level SPV courses are open to all students. For all 300-level SPV courses, students must maintain a minimum average of 2.7 GPA (B-) in the 200-level SPV courses (SPV 245, SPV 228, SPV 247) in order to continue in the certificate program. Therefore, students must complete all three 200-level SPV courses prior to taking any 300-level SPV course. In addition, SPV 321 is a prerequisite for SPV 326.
FAQs - Frequently asked questions about the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate
Should I enroll as a second-Bachelor’s degree student, or should I take the courses as a non-matriculated student through the Post-Baccalaureate Prerequisites Program?
Each student must determine the best plan for him/her/theirself. In general, if your overall gpa from your baccalaureate degree is not strong, you may want to consider obtaining a second degree with Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology as your major, in order to strengthen your graduate school application. If your gpa is strong, then the certificate program may be your best option.
If I complete the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate at Lehman College, will I be guaranteed admission to the graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology?
No, completion of the prerequisite courses does not guarantee you admission to a graduate program.
Do the courses meet the prerequisites at all graduate programs in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology?
Although the courses do meet all of the necessary prerequisites of the graduate program at Lehman College, they may not meet all of the prerequisites of graduate programs at other colleges. It is recommended that you carefully review the application criteria for the graduate programs to which you are considering submitting an application.
I already took some or the prerequisite courses several years ago. Will those courses still fulfill the current requirements?
It is possible that you may have to re-take courses that were originally taken many years ago. Please check with the undergraduate advisor.
