Educational Leadership

Welcome

Welcome to Special Education graduate programs at Lehman College!

Thank you for your interest in Lehman College’s Special Education hybrid graduate programs. Our programs prepare highly qualified special educators for the challenges and rewards of teaching in today's dynamic and diverse classrooms. As the only public university in the Bronx providing graduate programs in special education, our teacher candidates emerge as bold advocates for public education, dedicated to issues of equity, and determined in employing strong teaching practices. We uphold a commitment to social justice in educational reform and anti-racist pedagogy as essential to the development of teachers. Our programs are Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP)-accredited, meeting the highest national standards, and the philosophical, conceptual, and instructional underpinnings of Lehman Special Education programs showcase values and standards established by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). Our programs value culturally relevant teaching practices, inclusive education, and social-emotional learning as foundations of outstanding teaching and learning.

The Special Education program at Lehman College offers a variety of options for teachers who already hold licenses in general education and those who seek a career change to the dynamic field of Special Education. For those with teacher certification in general education, we offer master's degree programs in Early Childhood, Childhood, and Adolescent Special Education, all of which lead to both initial and professional certification in Special Education.

For those interested in a career change, dual certification master's degree programs in Special Education and general education at the early childhood and childhood level are offered, leading to a New York State certification in both special and general education.

In addition, Lehman College offers a Bilingual Extension for those who want to work with bilingual students and Advanced Certificates in Special Education for candidates with general education master’s degrees seeking Special Education preparation.

Please review the specific program information in the Graduate Bulletin, including qualifications for admission to each of the graduate degrees, certificates, and the bilingual extension. We look forward to welcoming you into the cadre of dedicated special educators at Lehman College.

If you have any questions, see our Frequently Asked Questions or contact either a program coordinator September-May or a graduate admissions office representative year-round.
