M.S.Ed. Program in Literacy Studies

The 36-credit Program in Literacy Studies leads to a Master of Science in Education degree. Registered in New York State, the program leads to professional certification in literacy in two different concentrations: birth – 6th grade and 5th – 12th grade.

The 45-48 Credit Dual Certification Program in Literacy and Special Education leads to a Master of Science in Education degree. Registered in New York State, the program leads to professional certification in two different concentrations: Literacy for birth-6th grade and Special Education in childhood education for 1st-6th grade.

The programs provide an intergenerational literacy bridge between communities, families, and schools. It serves educators' continued critical engagement in current research, methodology, theoretical advancements, and issues in reading, language, and literacy. Teachers in elementary, secondary, and adult educational settings develop a combined mastery of research, theory, and practical issues in current inquiry, and articulate working visions of the future of literacy education.
The program prepares students for professional engagement as intellectuals and practitioners in a pluralistic, multicultural educational system. Program graduates include teachers from preschool through 12th grade in all content areas who aspire to become reading teachers, literacy specialists, literacy coaches, literacy leaders, community educators, textbook authors, and school administrators. Some graduates also continue in doctoral programs and pursue leadership roles.

Admission Requirements for Professional Certification in Teaching Literacy

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
  • Demonstrated ability to pursue graduate study successfully, that is, a minimum grade average of 3.0 in the undergraduate records as a whole.
  • An initial teaching certificate or qualify for initial certification within three semesters.
  • An essay outlining career goals.
  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • An individual interview.
  • Submit scores of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) revise general test, i.e., verbal reasoning, qualitative reasoning, and analytical writing. Waivers for this requirement may apply. Please contact the program coordinator for more information.

M.S.Ed. Program in Literacy Studies Continuation Requirements

• Maintain GPA of 3.0.
• Meet any conditions placed on initial matriculation before the completion of 12 graduate credits. College and Departmental policies regarding academic probation also apply.

M.S.Ed. Program in Literacy Studies Graduation Requirements

Students must complete a minimum of the required graduate credits of study pertaining to their program. Students must earn a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 in their coursework to be recommended by the College for certification.
