Charmian Wells received her Ph.D. in Dance Studies from Temple University as a Presidential Fellow, and was the recipient of the Doctoral Dissertation Completion Grant and the Edrie Ferdun Scholarly Achievement Award. Her work examines articulations of queerness and diaspora in Black Arts Movement concert dance in New York City between 1965 and 1975. This research stems from her performance career as a principal dancer with Forces of Nature Dance Theatre, a position she has held since 2005. An excerpt of this research will be published in a forthcoming anthology edited by Thomas DeFrantz.
She has worked as an editorial assistant for Dance Research Journal. Her writing has been published in Critical Correspondence and The Brooklyn Rail. She holds a B.F.A. in Dance and an M.A. in Performace Studies from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. She was the co-founder and artistic director of Refractions Dance Collective from 2002 to 2011. She also teaches at Sarah Lawrrence College. For more about Charmian Wells, see her profile on Movement Research.
