Biography

Brian McCormick is an activist, writer, and educator. In 1989, he received a Mayor’s Volunteer Service Award and was nominated for a President’s Volunteer Action Award for coordinating a writing workshop with homeless youth. In 2019, he received the Linda LeRoy Janklow Teaching Artist award for his work with the teen programs of Arts Connection. He is on the board of directors of Pentacle/Dance Works, Inc.

In 2017, he joined the department of Music, Multimedia, Theatre & Dance at CUNY Lehman College. He also teaches part-time at The New School where he has taught graduate courses in media since 1997. He also teaches for the nationally recognized Teen Reviewers and Critics (TRaC) program of Arts Connection. He created and runs the after school program at Baryshnikov Arts Center. He has been a guest teaching-artist at Scholastic Arts, The Rubin Museum, Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, and Hong Kong Arts Festival Young Friends. He has been a panelist, moderator, guest curator, or adjudicator for Theater Communications Group (New Generations Program), New York Foundation for the Arts, Joyce Theater Foundation, Brooklyn Arts Council, LMCC, The Ailey Certificate School, Movement Research, National Performing Arts Convention, and the CMJ Music Marathon. He was a contributing editor at Gay City News from 1997-2017, and has been published in The New York Times, The Advocate, Movement Research Journal, Dance Magazine, Dance Studio Life, and BAMbill. He served on the New York Dance and Performance Awards (Bessies) committee from 2002-2012.
