Lehman Downs John Jay, Advance To Conference Finals Against Baruch
New
York, NY- Sally Nnamani scored 28 points and pulled down nine
rebounds to lead #3 seed Lehman into the championship game of the 2007 CUNY
Athletic Conference / Con Edison Women’s Basketball Championship.
Lehman (18-9 overall) almost saw their dream
season come to an end, as after losing an eight-lead, senior guard Kathy Santiago
turned
the ball over with 17.4 seconds remaining. Following the turnover, John Jay
guard Vanessa Rivera nailed a three-point shot to give the Bloodhounds a 58-57
lead. With the Lightning trailing by one point, Lehman turned to the sophomore
MVP, and she responded by slashing to the basket, and being fouled with one
second remaining. Nnamani then converted on one of two free throws to send
the game to an extra session.
The overtime period saw Lehman take over, as the Lightning outscored John Jay 13-3 to put the game away. Tiara Carroll added 16 points, including seven in overtime, while Monique Sampson tallied 10 points, 11 rebounds, and six steals for the Lightning (18-9).
Sha-Kia Hart netted 17 points and grabbed four steals while Lashannen Hogue poured in 16 points and snagged 20 rebounds for John Jay (18-9).
Lehman, making its first title game appearance in five years, will take on defending champion and #1 seed Baruch College in the final on Friday, February 23, at 5:30 PM on the campus of the City College of New York.
