(1867-1915) was born in Vienna and studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts before coming to the United States in 1889. During his first ten years as a United States citizen, Bitter provided sculptural enhancements for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Trinity Church in New York City. In the Bronx public art collection he created the design for the Henry Hudson Memorial Column. The column was completed after Bitter's death by his student Karl Gruppe.
