Public Art Workshops

Highlighting Public Art in The Bronx (www.lehman.edu/vpadvance/artgallery/publicart/), these workshops
conclude with a large-scale, collaborative artwork that is permanently installed in
the school. Materials may vary from glass or tile mosaics to painted murals and
found object assemblage. These workshops not only teach students a wide range of
art skills, but are also structured to develop democratic thinking and cooperative
learning in the studio. Students develop their own design ideas, discuss the
possibilities, vote, and then work together in small groups to produce the final
piece. Strategies for linking the art workshops with the school curriculum
are discussed with classroom teachers. When the final work is installed, students
discover the impact of public art on their community.
