2002 CUNY Student-Athletes of the Year

Tekela Robinson

Tekela Robinson

College: Borough of Manhattan Community College
Tekela Robinson exploded on the scene in 1999, both on and off the volleyball court at Borough of Manhattan Community College. During that season, Tekela was named CUNY Tournament   Most Valuable Player, Region XV Player of the Year and a first-team NJCAA All-American. A 28-year old import from Trinidad, Tekela took the following year off from volleyball, but returned in 2001 to again capture the CUNY Tournament title and MVP trophy. Although this season was quite different for the student-athlete at the TriBeCa school located just six blocks away from Ground Zero. "We couldn't practice or go to school," said Tekela. "We had to scramble to get to games. It was a crazy time to say the least." In two seasons, the 5'9 outside hitter led head coach Olga Lorenzo's team to an outstanding 49-7 record. Tekela, a two-time Academic All-Region honoree, will graduate this month with a 3.76 GPA and an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts. In September, she will head to Queens College, an NCAA Division II school, on a volleyball scholarship.

Melissa Shea

Melissa Shea

College: Hunter College
Rarely flamboyant but always making a splash, Melissa Shea has been a solid multi-sport performer since her arrival at Hunter College in 1998. The Sayville, NY, native became a four-year standout in cross country, swimming, and track for the Hawks while maintaining a 3.89 GPA with a double major in Sociology & Womenís Studies. Melissa is the first woman in conference history to compete on four championship teams in cross country. She was a three-time top ten finisher in the conference finals and helped Hunter advance to a trio of NCAA Regional Championships. She also competed in both indoor track, helping the Hawks win one CUNYAC Championship, and outdoor track. During the winter months, Melissa became a ten-time medalist (five gold, four silver, one bronze) at the CUNYAC Championships in swimming during the eventís three-year history. Hunter won the CUNYAC Championship in 2002 after two runner-up finishes in prior years. Always eager to broaden her educational horizons, Mel-issa has spent the Spring 2002 semester participating in the Study Abroad Program in France.

Kirk-Dean Scarlett

Kirk-Dean Scarlett

College: City College of New York
In the fall of 2001, the CCNY men's soccer team won school's first CUNYAC Regular Season title since 1994, and earned a berth in the ECAC Championships. After falling short in both tourna-ments, captain Kirk-Dean Scarlett felt like he could give a little more, so he joined the indoor track team and qualified for the ECAC's in the 200 meter dash. This is Kirk-Dean, a native of the Island of Jamaica, who emigrated with his family to Brooklyn six years ago while in high school. An architecture major with a 3.53 GPA, his soccer squad went to the ECAC Semifinals this past season and he qualified for the ECAC's in the 200m Indoors and the 400m Outdoors. Also, the 6' two-time CUNYAC soccer all-star finally won a CUNY title, in Indoor Track & Field. Off the field, Kirk-Dean has been honored many times for his achievements through scholarships and academic all-star teams. Kirk-Dean will graduate Magna Cum Laude following this semester and begin pursuing his career, "I am just now getting the experience necessary to be a architect, but I will not know for years what I am capable of achieving."

Jean Marc Legros

Jean Marc Legros

College: Queensborough Community College
Jean Marc Legros came to the United States from Haiti two years ago, and immediately enrolled at Queensborough Community College. He will graduate next semester with an Associate Degree in Computer Engineering Technology, boasting a 3.46 GPA. A soccer player since he was six, Jean made an immediate impact on the QCC team this year, leading the Tigers to the CUNY Tournament final. "Jean is a leader by example," claimed Tigers head coach Calvin Salmon. "He gives 100% in every practice and every game. During the 2001 season Jean played every position except goalkeeper. He was invaluable member of the team and has excellent skills. He will be very successful in his future endeavors because of these attributes." Jean leans on his two older brothers, who also live with him in the St. Albans section of Queens, for guidance. He expects to graduate in January and go right to a four-year college hopefully via an athletic or academic scholarship. "Playing soccer at Queensborough and for Coach Salmon has made me a better person. It is an experience that has changed my life and my focus for the better."
