2002 CUNYAC / Hospital For Special Surgery Women's Tennis Championship

Hunter Holds Off Brooklyn For Title

Flushing Meadows, NY - Hunter College earned the school's third consecutive CUNY Athletic Conference Women's Tournament Championship at the USTA National Tennis Center by holding off Brooklyn College 46-43. Of the nine flights, the Hawks won four singles championships and one doubles title to take the crown for the tenth time in the past thirteen years.

"I think it was more necessary to win this year" said a jubilant Hunter head coach Jocelyn Cruz. "We were 7-0 in CUNY and it all seemed to come together. It's my fourth season now as coach and the teamwork just gets better every year."

The top seed in the tournament, Hunter's Maureen McBride beat Brooklyn's Stella Rubina in the #1 singles flight, 6-1, 6-3. A senior two-sport star from Ridgefield, Connecticut finished her CUNY career with a 25-0 singles mark, having won the championship at the #2 flight the past two seasons.
"She's a great asset to our team. She inspires the younger players while providing consistency to the top position. " said head coach Jocelyn Cruz regarding McBride.

"She gets to the net often and that's what we work on in practice. It's a goal the entire team has been working for. I'm sad to see her graduate. "

In singles, the Hawks (7-7) also won the number three, four and five flights. Junior Marilyn Penaco won for the second time in three seasons, beating the College of Staten Island's Nadine Newbold in the #3 final, 6-2, 6-3. At #4, Soo Jung Kim got past Brooklyn's Yolanda Hillocks, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4, while sophomore Shirley Vargas won her first gold medal at #5 over Brooklyn's Amanda Rosario, 7-6 (10-8), 1-6, 6-4.
Albuja
To cap off the day, Kim, a sophomore from Eureka, CA, captured the #2 doubles championship with classmate Rachel Swygert (Las Vegas, NV) by a 6-3, 6-1 score over Hillocks and Renee Pointdujour. Penaco and Vargas also scored crucial points for the Hawks by reaching their doubles finals, but both came up short as the final day came to a close. In first doubles, the team of McBride and Penaco, who had won 16 consecutive CUNY doubles matches over the last three seasons were defeated by the tandem of Leisel-Ann Amow (Brooklyn, NY) and Jackie Albuja from John Jay, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2.

Just prior, Albuja, a junior from Queens, NY beat Pointdujour for the #2 singles crown, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Albuja played spirited tennis all weekend, leading the third-place Bloodhounds to the school's best finish in memory.

"I guess I find a way to win these matches. I really feel that I deserve the singles title more than before because it was a great match and I worked really hard getting to every ball. "-Soo Jung Kim "It's a good way to complete the season by winning the title again."

CaputoThe third double gold medal winner was Brooklyn sophomore Dana Caputo. A native of New York City's largest borough, Caputo won on a walkover in singles due to her opponent's inability to attend the Saturday match because of her religious duties. Later on, she paired with Elizabeth Mickhly (Brooklyn, NY) to win third doubles over Vargas and junior Corina Muresan (Maspeth, NY), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

"Elizabeth and I play very well together and this match proved as such," said Caputo. "It's great to see the hard work pay off in the CUNY Championships."

After Hunter (46) and Brooklyn (43), John Jay took third place in the event with 29 points, followed by Staten Island (21) and Lehman (16), Baruch (12), CCNY (11) and NY City Tech (3).
