Medgar Evers' Rannie Miles To Be Honored

Bronx, NY - Medgar Evers College women's basketball player Rannie Miles reached a significant milestone on Saturday, January 31 when she scored her 1,000th point for the Lady Cougars in a 49-35 victory at Brooklyn College.

Miles will be honored on Monday, February 8 before the start of the Medgar Evers College women's basketball game versus St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) at Medgar Evers College Carroll Street Gymnasium. The start of the game is scheduled for 8:00 pm.

Miles, who is in her third season at Medgar Evers College, reached the landmark when she hit her final free-throw in the City University of New York Athletic Conference game. She finished the game with 20 points. As of today, Miles has scored 1068 points in her college basketball career.

Miles is the second woman, and the fifth person in Medgar Evers College basketball history to surpass the 1000-point barrier. Melanie Payne scored 1146 points from 1992 to 1996. William Salmon (1285 points from 1974-1977), Chris Grant (1276 points from 1979 -1983) and Desmond Campbell (1265 points from 1992 -1996) are the other Medgar Evers College basketball players who have scored 1000 points or more.

"Rannie is already one of the premier basketball players in Medgar Evers College history, male or female.", says Medgar Evers College womens basketball Coach Roy Anderson. "The fact that she has another year of eligibility means she has the ability to re-write almost all our school records."

The Lady Cougars currently sport 10-11 win-loss record, and have won four games in a row. Miles has a 19.2 points per game average for the season, which ranks her second in the City University of New York Athletic Conference. She also is averaging 9.9 rebounds per game and 3.5 steals per game this season. So far this season, Miles has been named on the All Tournament teams at St. Joseph's College Tournament in West Hartford, Connecticut and the Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial Tournament, hosted by Medgar Evers College.

"Rannie has demonstrated excellent leadership this season and she has been a key factor in our success of late," adds Coach Anderson.
