The Queensborough Community College Tigers captured their second consecutive CUNY Athletic Conference Community College Baseball Championship with a 9-5 victory over the Bronx Community College Broncos, Wednesday evening at the College of Staten Island.
The Tigers scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to break a 5-5 deadlock and added two insurance runs in the ninth. With runners on second and third, Jonathan Rivera (Brooklyn, NY) relieved starter Wilson Castillo (Gompers/Bronx, NY). Rivera walked Dave Mercado (Long Island City/Queens, NY) and then uncorked a wild pitch, which plated Felipe Martinez (Mt. St. Michael/Queens, NY) with the game-winning run. Rightfielder John Basquez (Cardozo/Queens, NY) then drove in shortstop Frank Turzo (Holy Cross/Queens, NY) with a sacrifice fly to right. Queensborough added two insurance runs in ninth highlighted by a homer by Jason Martinez (Richmond Hill/Queens, NY) to lead of the inning.
“It never gets old winning conference championships,” said Queensborough head coach Craig Everett. “We could have scored more runs tonight as we left a lot of runners on base, but we’ll take the win.”
Queensborough Community College jumped out on top with two runs in the top of the first inning. With two outs, first baseman Felipe Martinez lined an RBI single to rightfield and Turzo followed with a double to left center to plate Martinez.
