Championship Tournament Preview

The CUNYAC Community College Women's Basketball Championships are set to get underway on Tuesday, February 16. All of the action will take place at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn. Top-seeded Hostos will face #4 seeded Queensborough at 5:30 pm. and #2 seeded Manhattan will meet #3 seeded Kingsborough at 7:30 pm. 

Hostos and Manhattan both finished 5-1 in the conference, but Hostos received the #1 seed in the tournament by virtue of a tie-breaker. Hostos, a first-year program, will try to put an end to Manhattan's six-year championship run.

Hostos, currently ranked eighth in the nation in the NJCAA, is being led by freshman guard Shanna Hamilton (Beach Channel/Far Rockaway, NY), who is averaging 16.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.1 steals per game. Classmate Morganna Green (Environmental Studies/Brooklyn, NY) is adding 9.8 points and 1.9 steals per game and 6'2” center Petagay Douse (East Stroudsburg/) leads the team in rebounding (8.2 pg.). Queensborough will be led by freshman guard Penelope Lymberatos (Francis Lewis/Queens, NY), one of the top guards in the conference.

Sophomore guard Latoya Steele (Brooklyn, NY) will lead #2 seeded Manhattan into battle against #3 seeded Kingsborough on the Wave's home court.  Steele leads the Panthers in scoring (16.5 ppg.) and is also averaging a team-high 3.0 steals per game. Freshman guard Natasha Whitney (Brooklyn, NY) is adding 14.7 points and sophomore Veronica Sherman (Brooklyn, NY) has connected on a team-leading 51 three-point field goals. Freshman Margaret Llewellyn (Canarsie/Brooklyn, NY) has been the top performer for Kingsborough this season. The point guard is averaging 12.0 points per game and leads the team with 65 steals. Sophomore forward Jahlaani Costello (Manhattan Center/Bronx, NY) leads the team in rebounding (17.5 rpg.) and freshman Latoya Patrick-Saunders (Wuerzburg American/Brooklyn, NY) is adding 8.3 points per game.
