With the CUNY Mini-Grant, Lehman College applied high-impact practices in faculty development and learning support to gateway mathematics and writing intensive courses for increased student success. These practices were threefold:
- to provide peer faculty development workshops in Mathematics;
- to offer Supplemental Instruction-based training for Math Lab tutors, and
- to supply class-based writing tutor support for intensive writing courses.
The Mathematics Department provided a series of eight 90-minute workshops focused on sharing effective teaching methods for course material in four mathematics classes. The Math Lab offered four Supplemental Instruction (SI)-based tutor training workshops that shared effective study and group tutoring strategies for students in gateway courses. The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) supplied one-to-one and small group academic support through classroom-based writing in upper-division writing intensive course sections.
