Careers In Teaching Student Support Services is part of a new Lehman College federally-funded TRIO Grant, effective September 1, 2010. The objective is to increase the number of disadvantaged, low-income college students, first generation college students, and college students with disabilities in the United States, who successfully complete a program of study at the post-secondary level and are qualified for certification as Early Childhood, Childhood, Middle or Secondary School teachers in New York State.
The program will increase the retention and graduation rates for these students and facilitate their earning New York State Teacher Certification.
The program will consist of a cohort of 140 freshmen, sophomores, and juniors and follow the model of intrusive advisement to work on student retention, progression toward degree completion, motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education, and help them develop financial and economic literacy to become effective teachers.
