Faculty members are the key to the success of sophomore year students. Faculty may participate in SYI’s Early Warning Referral System, Academic Workshops, Pre-Major Club Advisement, and Professional Development opportunities. Faculty members who are interested in participating in any one of these opportunities should contactTitleV.firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Early Warning Referral System
In fall 2014, the S.T.E.A.R. Early Warning System was implemented targeting all Freshmen and Sophomore students at Lehman. It relied on faculty participation to identify “at-risk” students and trigger alerts for advisors to create intervention plans and provide student support services. Early identification of students at-risk would allow timely intervention to support student success, which in turn would promote student persistence and retention.
Major Area of Study Workshops
Faculty members may participate in leading major/career workshops for small groups of sophomore students interested in pursuing the specified major area of study. The objective is to encourage sophomores to begin the process of exploring various majors and career paths, develop a sense of purpose, and develop faculty relationships. In addition, early major selection would allow timely advisement and selection of major courses, which in turn would promote student commitment, persistence, and retention.
Pre-Major Club Advisement
The Office of Student Life and the Sophomore Year Initiative (SYI) have teamed up to create new Pre-Major Clubs at Lehman including Pre-Law, Pre-Nursing, Pre-Business, and Psychology. The Pre-Major Clubs are open for all students, but are intended for freshmen and sophomores who are undeclared and are considering various majors to prepare for their major and/or field of interest. Club Membership includes a welcome event, a panel discussion to learn about relevant majors, a class trip, and various workshops with guest speakers. SYI is currently looking for full-time faculty members who may be interested in serving as an Advisor for a new pre-major club.
