Human Subjects Research

All faculty who plan to conduct research involving human subjects must obtain prior approval from Lehman’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). Human subjects research encompasses any funded or unfunded activities involving living individuals designed to test a hypothesis, permit conclusions to be drawn, and thereby to develop or contribute to generalized knowledge (expressed, for example, in theories, principles, and statements of relationships).

Research is usually described in a formal protocol that sets forth an objective and a set of procedures, which may involve either interactions, such as interviews or interventions, or obtaining identifiable private information, designed to reach that objective. Faculty members who plan to conduct human subjects research must complete a training module approved by the CUNY Office of Research Compliance before beginning any studies. Information regarding the IRB approval process and human subjects research training is available on the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs website.
