College Now Summer Arts Program Bursting At Seams By ROBERT FELIU

Lehman College has been strained this summer by the influx of applicants for their College Now summer arts program. This summer festival allows high school students to earn college credit.

“We’re at our limit right now, in terms of financing and we just don’t have the space to expand the program.” College Now coordinator David Gantz said “the digital imaging class is one of the first classes to fill up,” he said

Out of one hundred and some odd applicants only 86 were accepted. Many didn’t get their first choice of class. Gantz says the facilities used by the program can only sustain a strict number of students.

Mayulie Luciano applied for the digital imaging class but, like many applicants, had to settle for her second choice.

Gantz said the problem won’t be fixed anytime soon, and he is still trying to maintain a “quality that is appropriate for the students.”

A Layoff in Lehman Officers
By ZARIF MOHAMMED

Lehman College in the Bronx has received some recent budget cuts, which will limit the number of law officers in the campus. The cuts occurred around March, Causing a layoff in officers. The Public Safety is independent from the NYPD; nevertheless a cut in officers will have the same affect, said Mr. Ramirez, Assistant Director of Public Safety.
The Public Safety’s budget in a given fiscal year from July to the end of January is $2.5 million. The price of a guard’s salary is $45,000 and there are 65 guards in the campus. However with recent budget cuts, the amount of guards was decreased. The replacement of these guards is very time consuming, taking from 8 to 10 months.

“The Lehman campus is 37.5 acres and we need all the guards we can get,” said Ramirez. He also said “the loss has had a recent hike in theft.”

Local College Provides New Summer Programs to Community
By TIFFANY MEGNATH
This year Lehman College is featuring new additions to an already comprehensive list of programs in the Precollege Classes department.
These new programs range from academic preparation to physical fitness. Programs that have been running for at least a year include SAT Preparation, and Basketball for Young People. This year more programs have been added: Martial Arts Express, and “Singing” Stories, among others.
“People always expect new classes,” said Elizabeth Robles-Rivera, the Coordinator of the precollege classes. “There was a large number of applications this year, so new sections were opened.”

Part of the reason of attendance boom is the fact that the precollege program offers children and teens something to do in a neighborhood that might not offer as much.
“There’s something for everyone,” she stated. Also, the programs are appealing to parents because there are eight different packages with varying prices and hours.
