Journalism is the process of obtaining, editing and presenting news. It is presented through media such as newspapers, magazines and television. Journalists who create the news must be precise and accurate when reporting to the public. This means spending enough time to edit their story and make it interesting enough to be read. In addition, journalists follow what is known as the Principles of Journalism, seen in the book The Elements of Journalism. They learn that journalism's first obligation is to the truth, its essence is a discipline of verification, and its loyalty is to citizens.
In the journalism class of the Summer Arts Academy, students learn how to gain information through investigative interviews and research and how to use it when making a story. They also learn that journalism, according to Professor Lanahan, is "good storytelling". The students display their skills by going out to interview people for a story and creating their own articles, as well as having in-class group discussions. Therefore, if writing is your passion and you love to interact with others, then this is the class for you!
