The new science building was dedicated on Friday, October 12, 2012, with a program that featured tours, exhibits, and presentations of faculty and student research and the College's new STEM initiatives. The video below previews some of what we can expect to see and do in the new building.
With American students falling behind other industrialized nations in math and science education, forecasting a possible shortage of high-skilled workers and risk to our competitive edge, Lehman College recognizes the critical need to guide and cultivate new talent in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
Lehman's new $70 million science and research facility is an important step in meeting this need. The building will become a gateway to the sciences for Bronx students and is the first in a three-phase plan to create a dedicated science campus at the College.
Several major new programs are centered around the building and the teaching and research taking place within it. These initiatives are designed to harness the talent of promising students in the Bronx and beyond, create a new pipeline to careers in these fields, and reach in particular women and other groups traditionally underrepresented in the STEM fields. From individual mentoring and hands-on research opportunities for high school and college students to the preparation of more effective math and science teachers, Lehman is working to produce the STEM leaders of tomorrow.
