El Museo's Bienal: The (S) Files Opens at Lehman College Art Gallery
June 20, 2011
The Lehman College Art Gallery opens its most significant collaboration to date with El Museo del Barrio on June 22, as the Gallery becomes one of seven venues in New York City to host the Museo's sixth biennial, "The (S) Files." The show features the most innovative, cutting-edge art created by Latino, Caribbean, and Latin American artists currently working in the greater New York area. This year's exhibit takes on a broad exploration of the visual energy, events, and aesthetics of the street and showcases a record seventy-five emerging artists.
The installation at Lehman features imagery by a number of artists that share an affinity for illustration and the narrative force of images. Thinking of the exhibition as a picturesque walk through the city, it conceptualizes the street as a kind of visual library—an opportunity to sample people, objects, costumes, and cityscapes.
FEATURING the work of Patricia Belli, Alexis Duque, Gerard Ellis, Felipe Galindo, Julio Granados, Jonathan Harker, Gisela Insuaste, Sandra Mack-Valencia, Leonor Mendoza, Carlos N. Molina, Felix Morelo, Ohne Titel, VJ Demencia, and Elena Wen.
The exhibit will be on view at the Gallery through January 6, 2012. A reception with the artists will be held Monday, September 26, 6 to 8 p.m. Summer hours for visitors: June 22 - July 28, Tues.-Thurs., 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; August: By appointment.
