Prof. Stuart Chen-Hayes Elected President of NARACES

September 10, 2010

Dr. Stuart Chen-Hayes

Dr. Stuart Chen-Hayes (Counseling, Leadership, Literacy, and Special Education) is the current president of NARACES, the North Atlantic Regional Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and one of his first decisions in office was to move its annual conference to the New York area for the first time in thirty years.

The event will be held from Sept. 24-26 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Brunswick, N.J. and feature more than fifteen hours of sessions for students, professors, and professionals.

Dr. Rita Chi-Ying Chung, co-founder of Counselors Without Borders, and Dr. Cheryl Holcomb-McCoy, professor and chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services at Johns Hopkins University, will keynote the meeting. Social justice and equity for counselor education/supervision in K-20 schools, as well as clinical mental health, are the focus of the conference, which aims to help those working in this field create equity in their schools as well as in other settings.

For the first time, the NARACES conference will be completely green: the Hyatt Regency is solar-powered; attendees will dine on locally sourced food, and travel on discounted public transportation.

"There is so much waste at conventions," says Dr. Chen-Hayes, who is coordinator for Lehman's program in counselor education/school counseling. "It's important to highlight that we can all integrate eco-friendly practices into our lives and work. You can do conventions in a green way."
