Beijing Scholars Visit Lehman to Research Plants from China

July 27, 2010

(L-R) Dr. Chunlan Liu, Lijuan Ma, Dr. Edward Kennelly, and Dr. Chunhui Ma.

Working on research this summer with Dr. Edward Kennelly (Biological Sciences) are two scholars from Minzu University, located in Beijing. The scholars arrived in July and will work in Dr. Kennelly's lab until October, conducting research on plants that are native to China and are used locally for their medicinal properties. Their visit is funded by the Chinese Ministry of Education's.111 Project, which includes Minzu University and several top-ranked U.S. institutions, including CUNY and The New York Botanical Garden. Minzu University was established to support the education of ethnic minorities in China. Earlier this year, Dr. Kennelly visited there with his doctoral student, Adam Kavalier, to present their own research on the phytochemistry of medicinal plants, including black cohosh and hops. Facilitating the arrival of the visiting students was Dr. Chunhui Ma, a postdoctoral student also working in Dr. Kennelly's lab.
