["LEHMAN ALMA MATER" MUSIC PERFORMANCE BY LEHMAN COLLEGE COMMUNITY BAND, ALAN HOLLANDER, CONDUCTOR, AND RAYMOND DIAZ, SINGER; MUSIC: JOHN CORIGLIANO; LYRICS: RUTH ANN LIEF]
RAYMOND DIAZ:
There's a college living in the green
Where the young and old and in between
Come to add their luster to the name
Herbert Lehman earned before they came
And because of what its children give
Lehman College finds the strength to live
As a whole nobly greater than its parts
And alive forever in their hearts
Oh may you, Alma Mater,
Grow in stature through the years
And cherish those who come to you
With hopes and dreams and fears
A home in which they learn to be
Honest heirs of a precious legacy
Of beauty, truth, and eternal youth
In mind and spirit free

PRESIDENT RICARDO R. FERNÁNDEZ:
Welcome to the Forty-First Commencement of Lehman College, and Congratulations, Class of 2009. Remember, you're not leaving Lehman College, you are taking Lehman College with you.
02:39
CUNY SENIOR VICE CHANCELLOR JAY HERSHENSON:
You now have an excellent educational credential from Lehman College that you obtained the old fashion way. You earned it.
02:52
CUNY TRUSTEE CAROL ROBLES-ROMAN:
You will achieve greatness with the education and focus that this school has provided you.
03:04
CONGRESSMAN ANTHONY WEINER:
I want to say to your parents and grandparents, and brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles. For them, this is a graduation day as well; for them, this is a great joy.
03:20
CONGRESSMAN JOSÉ E. SERRANO:
No one who graduates in the Bronx is the traditional student. But that only adds to the beauty of who you are. And you must look in the mirror today and be proud of yourself.
03:37
NYC COMPTROLLER WILLIAM C. THOMPSON, JR.:
There are three types of people, ... there are those who watch things happen. There are those who make things happen. And there are those who wonder what happened. Lehman graduates make things happen.
03:49
BRONX BOROUGH PRESIDENT RUBÉN DIAZ, JR.:
You have a testimony. You have a story to tell. Go out there and tell the world your story. Go out there and tell the world your CUNY testimony. Go out there and share your Bronx tale. When you do so, the city, the Bronx, and, yes, this nation will be better off for it.
03:59
STUDENT SPEAKER YOLANDA ALVAREZ:
I have been homeless, hungry, poor, and unloved, yet somehow I managed to survive and rise above it all. Here at Lehman, I found support and encouragement when I was unsure. The staff and the departments were willing to help, and there was always a listening ear. The professors have inspired and they had an impact in my life.
04:45
COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER HON. LORRAINE CORTÉS-VÁZQUEZ:
No matter where you go, where you choose to work or play, leave it better than what you found it. You have that obligation to create a legacy.
04:59
RABBI DR. JONATHAN I. ROSENBLATT:
It is inspiring to be with you. But it is breathtaking to imagine the lives you will touch, the world you will build, the tears you will dry, and the high standards of personal integrity which you will set.
