CUNY on the Concourse celebrated the first graduation in its Certified Nursing Assistant Program on June 18, as seven students from varied backgrounds began new careers in healthcare.

Ranging in age from 27 to 49, the women included a number of single parents (and one grandparent), a worker displaced by 9/11, and several career-changers. Among them, they have 15 children.

Students completing the 130-hour, state-approved program and passing the certification exam can work in any healthcare setting, at salaries ranging from $9.50 to $15 an hour. Both the program's supervisor, Alder Davis, and its lead instructor, Rosa Rosario, are registered nurses and hold master's degrees in nursing from Lehman College.

CUNY on the Concourse is a new education facility, located at the corner of Fordham Road and the Grand Concourse, that offers credit, non-credit and certificate programs in business, technology, healthcare, ESL and other areas for students at all educational levels. The programs are offered in collaboration with the three CUNY colleges in the Bronx: Lehman College, Bronx Community College, and Hostos Community College.

Registration begins in August for the Fall semester. Classes begin September 15. For more information, call (718) 960-6900 or visit www.lehman.cuny.edu/cunyontheconcourse.
