Thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Lehman
College now has a new Advanced Teaching Suite. Open to all faculty, Room
201 of Carman Hall was refurbished during the fall semester with furniture,
books, and computers and is designed to assist faculty in their research
and in their work mentoring students.
Helping to dedicate the new facility this December were students, senior
administrators, and members of the History, Black Studies, and Latin American
Studies Departments who collaborated on the project, including Dr. Evelyn
Ackerman (History), writer of the successful grant proposal. Adding a special
meaning to the ceremony was Laura Spalter, a Lehman alumna who teaches social
studies at MS 80 and brought her entire class over to witness the dedication
and enjoy the guest lecture by Dr. Joyce Appleby, professor of history at
UCLA and a past president of both the American Historical Association and
the Organization of American Historians.
Speaking on "The Role of the Historian in Time of War," Dr.
Appleby talked about how historians can help us understand current events
by recalling episodes from the past that bear some similiarity to the present
and also discussed the different paths taken in the evolution of the Western
and Moslem worlds. A lively question-and-answer period followed.
