On March 11, Olanta and Dr. Prohaska visited Ladder Company 37 on Briggs Avenue, the primary firehouse protecting Lehman, to thank local firefighters and police officers for their service not only on 9/11 but throughout the year. On hand were Inspector Raymond Rooney of the 52nd Police Precinct (second from left) and Chief George W. Gierer (second from right). Chief Gierer commands NYFD Battalion 27, which includes the Briggs Avenue station and two other local firehouses. The battalion lost six men in the World Trade Center attack: Firefighters Ken Kumpel, Michael Lynch, Dennis McHugh and Bruce Van Hine and Lts. John Ginley and Thomas OíHagan. Ladder Company 37 inscribed their truck with the words spoken by President Bush in his message before both Houses of Congress shortly after the attack: "We will not tire. We will not falter. And we will not fail." During one of his appearances in New York City, President Bush subsequently rode on the truck, which was depicted at the close of the documentary "9/11" that was aired nationally on March 10th. ![]() |
