ehman's Lady Lightning made it into the record books again this month,
winning the team's fourth straight CUNY Indoor Track Championships with
a bevy of impressive performances. The Lightning shattered nine conference
records and beat York College into second place by 79 points. The entire
Lehman community congratulates each member of this unstoppable team!
Senior Paulette Baldwin annihilated the field by jumping 6.23 meters
(20 feet, 5 inches), one of the 20 best jumps in America. Teammate Martinia
Heath posted an NCAA provisional qualifying jump of 5.56 meters (18 feet,
3 inches). She then cleared 1.65 meters to take the high jump crown and
break the conference record. Sophomore Alecia Watson won her second CUNY
triple jump crown, with a conference record and NCAA automatic qualifying
performance of 11.84 meters.
In the field, sophomore Danielle Howard set a new CUNY standard in the
weight throw competition, tossing 13.44 meters. Sophomore Claudeen Williams
tossed 11.54 meters to claim second in the women's shot.
On the track, the Lightning swept the women's 55-meter dash. Again,
Baldwin led the way with an automatic NCAA qualifier of 7.16 seconds. The
senior was followed by her teammates Watson and Michelle Barnwell who ran
7.18 and 7.23 respectively. In the hurdles, Baldwin continued her dominance
with a winning time of 8.02 seconds, while Heath finished with 8.67 seconds.
On the men's side, Oliver St. Aud continued Lehman's tradition of fine sprinting
by winning the men's 55-meter dash in 6.44 seconds. St. Aud now ranks fifth
on the list of NCAA qualifiers. In the 400 medley, Barnwell finished in
an impressive 56.25 seconds, and freshman Livangah Pitts placed fourth with
a personal best of 59.73 seconds.
The Lightning's relays were equally impressive as the team both broke
conference records. The quartet of Barnwell, Watson, Pitts and Baldwin smashed
the CUNY standard in the mile relay with a time of 3:52.41. The distance
medley team of Lamarah Allen, Shelly-Ann Finnegan, Su-Elen Cuevas, and Maria
Castro reset the CUNY record in that event.
